100 ways to help your child pay attention <p she stares into space, ignoring her homework. He's oblivious to the math you're trying to teach. The kids are unfocused, distracted, zoned out. They just don't pay attention. You know. You've been there. Our family has, too. A typical homework session at our house used to go something like this: it has taken 20 minutes to get our son ron ready to do his math homework. We've dealt with a lost assignment, a broken pencil, insatiable thirst and a tale about throw up. But finally, ron is at the table with his workbook open. He looks at the page. "there are twenty problems i'll never get these done " to his credit, he starts, but when i check five minutes later, he's only done problem one…and he's watching the dog scratch her ear.
